Proverbs 13:22 reminds us, *“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.”* That inheritance can be a beautiful blessing—but without wisdom, it can also become a source of confusion or conflict. That’s why, as faithful stewards, we must focus on transferring wisdom before we transfer wealth.

So what does that look like in practice? Think of it as a series of intentional wisdom investments throughout your children’s lives. Whether they’re toddlers learning to share or grown adults managing a budget, here are three practices that have shaped my own journey as a mom and stewardship coach.

**1. Help Your Children Discover and Work in Their Giftedness**

Regardless of how much wealth your children inherit—or don’t—God designed them to work. Made in the image of the Creator, we reflect His character through meaningful labor. Helping your children understand their unique wiring and encouraging them to pursue it is one of the most powerful investments you can make.

In our family, that looked different for each child. My youngest was teaching her dolls by the time she was three—it was clear early on that her gift was in teaching. My oldest, on the other hand, explored various paths—marriage counseling, administrative roles—before landing on her true passion: preschool education. She didn’t find her calling until 30, but the journey was just as important as the destination.

Our role as parents isn’t to dictate their path but to walk with them, pray with them, and trust God to reveal their strengths. Don’t underestimate the value of encouragement, conversation, and tools like career assessments to help your children discover how they’re wired.

**2. Let Them Experience the Consequences of Poor Financial Choices**

This one’s tough. As parents, our instinct is to shield our children from pain. But sometimes, the most loving response is to step back.

I’ll never forget when our son made a poor decision involving a bicycle. It was heartbreaking to watch him deal with the loss. My husband and I had to remind ourselves: we’re not just parenting—we’re preparing a future steward. And that painful lesson stuck with him far more than any lecture could have.

Allowing children to experience the natural consequences of their financial decisions helps them develop discernment and responsibility. It’s not about punishing them—it’s about equipping them to become wise, faithful stewards.

**3. Give Them Real Experience Managing Money**

Theory matters, but practice is where the lessons stick.

We started teaching our kids about money when they were in preschool, using three simple envelopes: give, save, and spend. As they grew, we added categories, eventually helping them manage a full spending plan before they left for college.

The Greatest Inheritance You Can Give

**Have you ever felt a quiet sense of pride after giving, like you were just a little more faithful than others?**

When our giving becomes a way to elevate ourselves rather than glorify God, we’ve missed the heart of generosity—and possibly much more.

**Hidden Motives: Giving to Look Good**

Not all giving flows from a pure heart. Some of the most dangerous motivations are those that appear outwardly good but inwardly reveal pride. One of the most deceptive tendencies is the desire to give to feel morally superior.

It’s the impulse to give to prove we’re spiritually ahead. To show God—or others—that we’ve got it right. But when generosity becomes a way to elevate ourselves rather than glorify God, we miss the true heart of giving.

Jesus addressed this directly in Luke 18:

*“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.”* (Luke 18:10–14)

**Why the Pharisee Missed the Mark**

Let that sink in: Jesus says the humble tax collector—not the tithing, fasting Pharisee—went home justified. That means the Pharisee, despite his religious performance, was not right with God. He wasn’t saved.

Why? Because he trusted in himself. His giving became a way to elevate his righteousness and look down on others. This echoes Jesus’ sobering words in Matthew 7, where many say, *“Lord, Lord, didn’t we do all these things in your name?”* And He replies, *“I never knew you.”*

They did religious things—even impressive ones—but their hearts weren’t surrendered to Christ. When we give to make ourselves look good, we miss the heart of the gospel and risk trusting in our performance rather than His finished work.

There’s nothing wrong with feeling joy after giving. Scripture tells us God loves a cheerful giver. But if that joy turns into spiritual pride—if we start comparing ourselves to others or feeling superior because of how much we give—we’ve crossed a line. Deuteronomy 8 warns against this mindset:

*“You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth…”* (vv. 17–18)

**The True Hero of Our Generosity**

The antidote to self-righteousness is remembering the source. Everything we have—even the ability to give—comes from God. We’re not the heroes of our generosity stories. He is. Jesus also warns in Matthew 6:

*“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them… When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets… Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”* (vv. 1–2)

If we give to be noticed, our gift isn’t truly for God—it’s for us. And any praise we receive in return will be our only reward.

So, what does humble generosity look like? It looks like giving quietly, even sacrificially, without expecting praise. It flows from gratitude, not superiority. It reflects Christ, not ourselves.

May we display the humility of John the Baptist, who, when others worried that Jesus was gaining more attention than him, simply said: *“He must increase, but I must decrease.”* (John 3:30)

**Three Steps to Combat Pride in Giving**

So, what do you do if you recognize pride in your giving?

- **First**, bring it to the Lord. Confess it honestly. His grace is enough to cleanse and correct us.
- **Second**, refocus on gratitude. The most humble givers are those who remember how much they’ve been forgiven.
- **Third**, ask God to help you give in ways that reinforce humility. That might mean giving anonymously or choosing to give where no one will see or praise you. Before each gift, simply pray: “Lord, may this reflect You, not me.”

**A Heart Set on Christ**

When it comes to giving, the temptation to impress others—or even to reassure ourselves—can be strong. But biblical generosity isn’t a performance. It’s a response. A response to grace. A response to mercy. A response to the overwhelming love of a God who gave everything for us.

True generosity flows from a heart that knows it has nothing to prove and nothing to earn. It doesn’t seek recognition. It doesn’t need applause. It simply desires to reflect the heart of Christ, who humbled Himself and gave freely, joyfully, and sacrificially.

If you’ve noticed pride creeping into your giving, don’t despair. Let that conviction lead you—not to shame—but to the foot of the cross. There, we find the freedom to give from a place of joy, not pressure. From humility, not superiority. From gratitude, not guilt.

Ask God to shape your giving into something that glorifies Him. Choose generosity that draws attention not to your faithfulness, but to His. And remember: the most beautiful gifts are often the quiet ones, given with no fanfare, out of a heart that simply says, “Thank You.”

**Have you ever used your giving to steer decisions?**

It might seem harmless—or even wise—to designate your giving or withhold it when you disagree with leadership. But when our generosity becomes a tool for control, we cross a line. Now, let’s be honest—no one likes the word control when it’s pointed at them. However, in church life, it manifests more than we might expect.

Sometimes, people give to specific ministries because they don’t trust how the church uses general funds. Or they withhold giving when a leadership decision doesn't go their way. Maybe a new worship style, a change in staffing, or a shift in the budget makes them uncomfortable, so they respond by tightening their wallets.


### **Control Masquerading as Stewardship**


On the surface, it might look like financial stewardship. But underneath, it can be a way of saying, *“I want things to go my way, and I’ll give—or not give—to make that happen.”* That’s not generosity. That’s leverage. And Scripture warns us against it.

In Mark 7, Jesus confronts the Pharisees about a practice known as Corban. It was a way of designating money as “dedicated to God,” which sounds noble, but it was being used to avoid the responsibility of caring for one’s parents in their elder years. Here’s how [GotQuestions.org](http://gotquestions.org) explains it:

*“The Pharisees took a legitimate Corban offering and used it in an illegitimate and devious way to defraud their parents…Jesus tells the Pharisees that their misuse of Corban was an evil rationale to avoid doing what they should.”*

The issue wasn’t the gift itself—it was the motive behind it. They were giving in a way that allowed them to maintain control, even if it meant dishonoring others and disobeying God. Sadly, that same spirit still lingers in how some people give today.

They say things like, *“I’ll give, but only to missions, not to salaries.”* Or, *“I’m not giving while that pastor’s still here.”* Sometimes it’s unspoken—but it’s still there. Giving becomes conditional. And those conditions often reveal an unhealthy desire to control. But here’s what we need to remember: giving isn’t about control—it’s about surrender.


### **The Call to Surrender**


Psalm 24:1 says,

*“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.”*

That includes our money. Our role isn’t to use it to steer the church. It’s to steward it faithfully for God’s purposes.

In Acts 4, we see the early church sharing resources freely. People sold land and possessions and laid the proceeds at the apostles’ feet. There was trust. There was unity. And there was surrender. No one said, *“Here’s my gift—but make sure it goes where I want.”*

Now, does this mean churches should avoid transparency or accountability? Of course not. Leaders are called to steward resources wisely and communicate openly and transparently. But giving with strings attached isn't about wisdom—it’s about control. And control is the opposite of trust.

Let me ask you: What’s driving your generosity? Is it love? Faith? Worship? Or is it preference, power, or payback?

When we give to get our way—or to withhold support until things go our way—we’re no longer giving with a cheerful heart. We’re treating God’s work like a contract, not a calling.

And here’s the good news: when we let go of control, we find peace. We don’t have to carry the weight of every decision. We don’t have to micromanage God’s Kingdom. We can give with open hands and trust that He’s working through His church—even when it looks different than we expected.


### **Three Steps Toward Surrendered Giving**

1. **Confess it to the Lord.** He’s gracious and patient. Ask Him to help you give with a posture of surrender, not leverage.


2. **Practice Releasing Your Preferences.** That doesn’t mean you stop asking questions or seeking accountability—it just means your generosity isn’t based on getting your way.


3. **Give with Trust.** Trust in God. Trust in His ability to work through imperfect leaders. And trust that your giving, when done with the right heart, honors Him.

**Because when we give to control, we’re placing ourselves at the center. But when we give in faith, we’re putting God where He belongs—at the center of it all.**

When our generosity becomes a tool for control, we cross a line. In church life, it manifests more than we might expect.

Giving as Worship, Not Leverage

**Have you ever felt like giving to your church is more of a burden than a joy?**

Several common but harmful motivations for giving might sound spiritual on the surface, but actually miss the mark of biblical generosity. Not the least of these is guilt.

We’re told in 2 Corinthians 9:7:

*“God loves a cheerful giver.”*

But let’s not miss the first part of that verse. Paul writes:

*“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion…”*

Those words are important: “*not reluctantly* and *not under compulsion”*. In other words, giving shouldn’t come from guilt. It should come from joy, freedom, and a desire to partner with God’s Kingdom work.

**The Problem with Guilt-Driven Giving**

Guilt is a powerful motivator. Maybe you’ve felt it—sitting in church as the offering plate passes or a giving campaign launches, and your heart sinks. Thoughts race: *“I haven’t given enough… I’m failing God.”*

That kind of giving isn’t rooted in grace—it’s rooted in fear. And that’s a problem.

You see, guilt-driven generosity misses the heart of the gospel. Romans 8:1 reminds us:

*“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”*

If that’s true—and it is—then we need to be very cautious about any teaching or impulse that leads us to give because we feel condemned. Christ didn’t go to the cross so we could live under spiritual guilt trips. He went to the cross to free us from them.

If you’re in Christ, your guilt has been dealt with, once and for all. And that includes any guilt you feel about what you did or didn’t put in the offering plate.

**Guilt vs. Conviction**

We must make an important distinction: there’s a difference between guilt and conviction.

Guilt is a tool of the enemy. It isolates us. It whispers, *“You’ll never be good enough.”*

But conviction? That’s the Spirit’s work—lovingly inviting us into deeper trust in Him. He says, “Come. Be transformed. Let me shape your heart.”

John 16:8 says the Holy Spirit convicts us, not to shame, but to lead us into truth. So if you feel stirred to give, not out of fear but to reflect God’s heart, that’s not guilt—it’s growth.

Here’s a helpful way to tell the difference: Guilt says, *“I must give, or else.”* Grace says, *“I get to give—because of all I’ve received in Christ.”*

There’s a powerful passage in Hebrews 9 that explains how the blood of Christ cleanses us, allowing us to serve God with a clear conscience. Verse 14 says:

*“How much more, then, will the blood of Christ…cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!”*

Notice that—it’s only when our consciences are cleansed that we’re truly free to serve. The same is true with giving. We can’t give faithfully while carrying guilt. We need to be reminded of the gospel of grace.

Here’s the irony: giving out of guilt actually blocks the transformation that generosity is meant to bring. When we give cheerfully, we’re reminded that all we have is from God—that we’re stewards, not owners. That reshapes us from the inside out.

To put it another way, when we give out of guilt, we’re missing out on walking in the freedom of the gospel. But when we give with joy, we’re declaring that Jesus is enough.

**Giving from Grace, Not Guilt**

We don’t give to earn God’s love. We already have it. We don’t give to cover up shame. Jesus already took that. We give because we’ve been invited to participate in something beautiful—God’s Kingdom work in the world.

If you realize that guilt has been shaping your giving:

- **First**, bring that to the Lord. Don’t run from it. Confess it and ask Him to renew your heart.
- **Second**, reflect on how God has provided for you. Gratitude is the seedbed of generosity. When we remember what God has already done, we stop giving to earn His favor and start giving because we already have it.
- **And finally**, ask: *What does joyful giving look like in this season?* Not compared to others, but in light of your own journey with God.

**Because God isn’t after your money, He’s after your heart. And when He has your heart, generosity will follow—not from guilt, but from grace.**

When Giving Feels Like a Burden

**How do you live a life that truly flourishes—not just financially, but in every area God cares about? What does a life shaped by God’s design actually look like?**

It’s essential to understand that we’re not referring to a rigid mold or checklist. A faithful lifestyle shaped by Scripture will look different for each person, yet specific themes emerge from the Bible. It’s living in alignment with biblical principles every day, especially these:

**Foundations of a Flourishing Life**

Stewardship means recognizing that God is the owner of everything, and we are His managers. It means managing not just money, but time, talents, and resources for His glory. Psalm 24:1 reminds us that we don’t own what we have— we only manage it: *“The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell in it.”*

Generosity flows from gratitude and trust, reflecting God’s heart for giving. 2 Corinthians 9 teaches us to give cheerfully, not reluctantly, as an act of worship. Contentment frees us from the endless cycle of wanting more and allows us to rest in God’s provision. Integrity and honesty in all dealings—Proverbs is filled with guidance about honest scales and faithful business.

Purposeful living means every decision we make—financial or otherwise—is done with eternity in view, not just temporary gain. This lifestyle transforms every part of who we are. Colossians 3:23 tells us, *“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”*

**Aligning with God’s Principles**

These principles aren’t just good ideas—they’re God’s design for flourishing. Several things can help us determine whether we’re living in alignment with God’s financial principles:

- Budgeting with wisdom, knowing where every dollar is going, and ensuring our spending aligns with our values.
- Avoiding unnecessary debt and living within our means.
- Giving generously, not just from leftover income, but as a priority.
- In relationships, it means serving others, forgiving, and building a sense of community.
- Work becomes worship when we do it with excellence, not just for a paycheck, but as a service to God and neighbor.
- Making decisions thoughtfully, considering how each one reflects our faith.

Christ impacts every aspect of a person’s life: whether that’s money, work, relationships, or even leisure, with intentionality.

**Taking the First Step**

If you think, *“I want that kind of life,”* start with prayer—invite God to guide your heart and choices. Spend time in Scripture to understand His design for life and finances. Seek out a community that encourages and challenges you.

Begin small—maybe start by creating a budget, giving regularly, or setting boundaries in your work. Remember, this is a journey, not a checklist. Growth happens over time, and God’s grace covers our imperfections.

**Living for Christ is about daily faithfulness, trusting God’s leading every step of the way.**

Living the Life God Designed for You

**In a world where scarcity seems to define our daily experience, it’s easy to feel like there’s never enough—whether it’s not enough money, not enough time, or not enough security. But is that really the whole story?**

The belief that “there won’t be enough” is anything but new. From the moment sin entered the world, scarcity became part of the human story—not because God lacked resources, but because fear and distrust entered our hearts.

Jesus described the enemy (the thief) as one who “comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10a). That’s precisely what a scarcity mindset does. It steals our peace, kills our joy, and destroys our trust in God’s provision. It convinces us to hoard instead of share, to grasp instead of give, and to stress instead of rest.

This mindset traps us in anxiety. It’s a form of slavery—where we measure life by what we don’t have rather than by who God is. But Jesus didn’t leave us there. Later in that same verse, He continues saying, *“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”*

God’s abundance isn’t a prosperity slogan—it’s a promise rooted in His character. Just look at the opening pages of Scripture. Genesis 1 reveals a God who doesn’t create out of stinginess but out of overflowing generosity. He fills the skies with stars, the oceans with creatures, and the land with fruit-bearing trees—not because He had to, but because He delighted to.

We don’t serve a God of just enough—we serve a God of more than enough. As Elisabeth Elliot once put it, *“God has promised to supply all our needs. What we don’t have now, we don’t need now.”*

**Abundance Is Who God Is**

Jesus Himself modeled this kind of trust. Though He had no home of His own and faced hunger, rejection, and the cross, He never lived from fear. Instead, He lived generously—turning water into wine, feeding thousands with a boy’s lunch, and offering forgiveness freely to all who came to Him.

And He invited His followers to live the same way. In Matthew 6:25–34, Jesus says, *“Do not be anxious about your life… Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.”*

That passage doesn’t promise us a life free from hardship. But it does promise something better: a life free from worry when we trust our Father in heaven. *“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,”* Jesus says, *“and all these things will be added to you”* (Matthew 6:33).

**From Striving to Trust**

So, how do we shift from anxiety to peace? From striving to trust? From hoarding to generosity?

- **Renew Your Mind** – Romans 12:2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. We ask God to help us see the world, not through the lens of lack, but through the lens of His abundant love.
- **Practice Gratitude** – Gratitude redirects our focus from what we’re missing to what God has already provided.
- **Embrace Stewardship** – We don’t own anything; everything we have is a gift. As Proverbs 3:9 encourages, *“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce.”*
- **Give in Faith** – Giving isn’t about losing. It’s about trusting. As 2 Corinthians 9:8 reminds us, *“God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that… you may abound in every good work.”*

Living in God’s abundance doesn’t mean you’ll never face hard times. But it does mean you’ll never face them alone, and you’ll never have to live enslaved to fear.

So when the world says, “There’s not enough,” we can look to the One who owns the cattle on a thousand hills and know—He is more than enough. His abundance isn’t just about material provision. It’s about peace that passes understanding, joy in the midst of sorrow, and confidence that our Father knows what we need, even before we ask.

In an age where scams are becoming more sophisticated by the day, Scripture reminds us that being cautious isn’t just wise—it’s an act of stewardship. As believers, we’re called not to live in fear, but to walk in wisdom, especially when it comes to managing and protecting our finances.

Scams show up through every possible channel—phone, email, text, social media, and even through impersonation of people we know and trust. But with prayerful awareness and practical action, we can protect what God has entrusted to us.

**1. Pause Before You Respond**

Scammers prey on urgency. If someone pressures you to act immediately—whether it’s a call from a “bank” or a text about a compromised account—take a breath. Slow down. Hang up and call the official number on your card. Check the actual sender’s email. Urgency is a red flag.

**2. Avoid Untraceable Payments**

Never send money via wire transfer or gift cards. No legitimate organization will ask for payment that way. Scammers use these methods precisely because they’re almost impossible to trace. If someone insists, walk away.

**3. Shop with a Credit Card**

When shopping online, use a credit card instead of a debit card. Credit cards offer better fraud protection and limit your liability if something goes wrong.

**4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication**

Think of two-factor authentication as a second lock on your digital front door. Even if a scammer has your password, they can’t access your account without a one-time code sent to your phone or email. Enable this on all financial accounts.

**5. Use Strong, Unique Passwords**

Don’t reuse passwords. Instead, use a password manager like [Bitwarden](https://bitwarden.com/) or [NordPass](https://nordpass.com/plans/) to generate and store secure, unique passwords for each account. These tools offer free versions that are easy to use and an excellent first defense against hacking.

**6. Monitor Your Accounts**

Most banks offer alerts for unusual activity, large transactions, or logins. Take advantage of these tools—they’re like financial alarm systems that help you catch fraud early before damage is done.

**7. Freeze Your Credit**

One of the most effective defenses against identity theft is a credit freeze. It’s free with all three major credit bureaus and can be lifted temporarily when needed. Think of it as placing a padlock on your credit file.

**8. Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Financial Tasks**

Never check your financial accounts on public Wi-Fi—whether at coffee shops, airports, or libraries. Wait until you’re on a secure, private connection. And avoid using public or borrowed devices for sensitive tasks.

**9. Be Mindful on Social Media**

Oversharing can give scammers clues to your passwords or security answers. Keep your profiles private and think twice before posting birthdays, family names, recent purchases, or vacation details.

**10. Shred Sensitive Documents**

Old-school identity theft still happens. Shred bank statements, tax forms, and anything with personal information before tossing them. Don’t give a scammer a reason to go digging through your trash.

**11. Don’t Click Suspicious Links**

Hackers can hijack email or social media accounts and send phishing messages that seem legitimate. If something feels off—even from someone you know—reach out to verify before clicking anything.

**12. Talk About It With Loved Ones**

Scammers often target the most vulnerable individuals, particularly older adults and teenagers. Make this a family conversation. Share tips, updates, and warnings. Helping others stay informed is one more way to practice faithful stewardship.

**13. Verify Identity Protection Offers**

If you receive a letter or email offering free identity protection after a data breach, don’t click the links. Instead, go directly to the company’s official website or call their customer service number to confirm the offer.

Protecting Your Finances from Scams in a Digital World

**In C.S. Lewis’s *The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe*, Aslan tells Lucy, *“Things never happen the same way twice.”*** 

It’s a good reminder that life brings changes. They’re unavoidable, but how we choose to meet them is up to us. We can look to *[The Chronicles of Narnia](https://www.cslewis.com/us/books/?collection=narnia&id=745173)* for insights on managing life’s changes.

Most of us are familiar with C.S. Lewis's profound allegory for the life of Christ. Aslan the Lion represents Christ, of course. In the above quote, Aslan comforts little Lucy Pevensie about the changes and challenges she and her siblings are facing.

**The Inevitability of Change**

We face many changes as well, even just through the calendar year. For example, summer is a time when we look ahead to the school year. Even if we no longer have kids in school, we often make plans that mirror an August-to-May school calendar.

Whether you have a child entering kindergarten or a rising senior anticipating graduation, you’re planning a move, or dealing with aging parents, financial decisions are embedded in every life transition. Our friend [Mitch Anthony](https://www.mitchanthony.com/about/) likes to say, *“Money goes into motion when life goes into transition.”* It’s easy to remember, but often hard to manage.

**Five Ways to Meet and Manage Change**

- **Pray for wisdom.**  New seasons require new wisdom. There are two ways to learn in a new season: through pain or wisdom.  We probably all remember lessons learned through the painful consequences of a poor decision in our teenage years.  We discovered that pain is a costly way to learn. So let’s choose wisdom!
- **Seek godly counsel.** For example, if your oldest child is going to enter college this fall, what can you learn from other parents who have college graduates? What do they wish they had done differently? What did they do well that they would repeat? 
- **Determine financial decisions** that will accompany this life transition. Staying with the college student example, you’ve probably planned for paying basic college expenses, but have you discussed what living expenses your child will be responsible for? Will they have a part-time job? Will you provide a monthly stipend (I like to call it that!) for them to manage? Bottom line: What will you provide, and what do you expect them to provide?
- **Decide ahead of time** what you will do when— or if— the child calls home to say they are out of money. Do you have an emergency fund ready for that?
- **Communicate your financial decisions** now before the transition is complete. When it’s a child going to college or some other life transition, be sure that you’ve clearly communicated what they are responsible for. If it’s a move, have you clearly communicated with the realtor? The more we communicate our financial decisions, the more accountability we have to stick with them in the midst of life's transitions.

**Stewardship in Every Season**

I’ve found that all five of these strategies are essential for staying grounded during transitions. Whether it’s welcoming a new child into your home, preparing financially for a child going off to college, or moving to a new location, taking the time now to lay the foundation will save a lot of stress later on.

And when we really stop to think about it, planning ahead isn’t just a practical choice. As followers of Christ, we’re called to be good stewards of everything He’s entrusted to us—our time, our money, our opportunities. 

**Transitions don’t come the same way twice (as Aslan points out!)—but the God who walks with us through each season never changes. So when we prepare now—with prayer, purpose, and faith—we’re not just getting ready for what’s coming. We’re taking an act of trust in our unchanging God.**

This is a good reminder that life brings changes. They’re unavoidable, but how we choose to meet them is up to us.

Planning for What’s Next: Faithful Stewardship in Seasons of Change

*“He who has ears, let him hear.”* - Matthew 13:9

**Those were Jesus’ closing words after telling the Parable of the Sower, a story that invites us to listen carefully, not just with our ears, but with our hearts. That story can reveal a lot about the heart behind our finances, especially the warning about *“the deceitfulness of riches.”***

**The Story Behind the Soil**

The Parable appears in Matthew 13, Mark 4, and Luke 8. It begins with a farmer scattering seed, which falls on four types of soil. Jesus later explains that the seed is the Word of God, and the soils represent different heart conditions. Some hearts are hard, others shallow. Some are fertile and ready, but one soil in particular should draw our attention: where the seed fell among thorns.

In Matthew 13:22, Jesus says, *“As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.”* What does He mean?

First, Jesus points to *"the cares of the world"*, the daily anxieties and distractions that can crowd out our trust in God. Then, He adds *“the deceitfulness of riches.”* It’s not wealth itself that’s the issue. It’s the lie wealth tells: that more money will bring more peace, that possessions equal security, and that success means significance.

The Bible consistently warns us about that lie. Proverbs 11:28 says, *“Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.”* And Paul reminds Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:17, *“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God.”*

**The Illusion of Control**

Wealth deceives us by offering the illusion of control and independence. It tempts us to believe we’re self-sufficient. And when we buy that lie, we slowly stop depending on God. Like thorns in a garden, worldly cares and the lure of wealth take root in our hearts, slowly crowding out our affection for God. The space once reserved for trust and obedience becomes overrun with distraction and self-reliance.

It’s like C.S. Lewis put it: *“Prosperity knits a man to the world. He feels that he is 'finding his place in it,' while really it is finding its place in him.”*

You might be saving diligently, investing wisely, and even giving regularly. But if you’re trusting in your portfolio more than God’s promises or if your finances have become a source of anxiety, then it may be time to do a heart check. What kind of soil are you cultivating?

When unexpected expenses hit, what comes first, prayer or panic? When you think about the future, is your hope grounded in your retirement account or in the One who holds all things together?

Jesus said the seed among thorns becomes *“unfruitful.”* The Word doesn’t lose its power, but when wealth and worry take over our hearts, we stop responding to it. Outwardly, we may look faithful, but inwardly, our love for Him is being choked out. 

**Cultivating Good Soil**

So, how do we respond?

Jesus points to the solution just a few verses later. In Matthew 13:23, He says the good soil is the one who *“hears the word and understands it; he indeed bears fruit and yields.”* But receiving God’s Word deeply isn’t a one-time event—it’s a lifelong process of cultivating the soil of our hearts. It means creating space where God’s truth can take root, thrive, and grow, without being overtaken by competing desires. That’s how fruitfulness begins and continues.

Here are three simple practices to help you cultivate “good soil” in your finances:

**1. Prioritize your giving.** Start with generosity, not as an afterthought, but as an act of worship. Giving reminds us that money is not our master and that we trust God to provide for us.

**2. Check your emotional temperature.** If your peace rises and falls with your financial circumstances, that’s a signal to lean into God’s Word more than your wallet.

**3. Rethink your financial goals.** Ask yourself: *What am I building? And why?* Is your financial plan aligned with Kingdom purposes, or is it just chasing comfort or status?

As Dallas Willard said, *“The main thing God gets out of your life is the person you become.”* That includes how you handle money. Generosity, peace, and contentment are fruits of a life rooted in Christ, not one choked out by wealth.

Remember that the condition of your heart matters more than the condition of your accounts. If you want to be fruitful in your finances and faithful in your walk with God, start by asking: What am I trusting in? Let the answer lead you back to Christ, because only in Him will your life bear lasting fruit.

It’s the lie wealth tells: that more money will bring more peace, that possessions equal security, and that success means significance.

What Kind of Soil Are You Cultivating?

***“Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.”*  Ecclesiastes 4:4**

Ecclesiastes shows us how even good work can go wrong when driven by envy. What starts as diligence can quickly become a pursuit of status and approval that leaves us empty. The good news is that this treasured book also shows that God invites us into something much greater.

[The Bible Project](https://bibleproject.com/) says Ecclesiastes *“targets all the ways we try to build meaning and purpose in life apart from God.”* It gives voice to the Preacher, who carefully exposes the emptiness of paths like pleasure, wealth, and status. Recently, we’ve looked at the idols of [pleasure](https://www.faithfi.com/faithfi/tearing-down-the-idol-of-pleasure-7842) and [accumulation](https://www.faithfi.com/faithfi/the-gift-of-perspective-7827). Now we’ll turn to the idol of status.

This one can be harder to spot. The line between excellence and envy is thin. Ecclesiastes 4:4 says, “Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor.” That’s a striking thought. Our motivation may not be love of the work or calling—it’s often the quiet urge to compete. To keep up. To be seen.

**The Whisper of Status**

That’s what status does. It whispers, *You’re not enough—unless others notice you.* And without realizing it, our careers, spending, and even our generosity, can become ways of proving our worth.

“Keeping up with the Joneses” isn’t just a saying—it’s a way of life for many. We compare houses, vacations, schools, and the pressure to match others can lead to debt, burnout, and dissatisfaction with what God has already provided.

And in our digital age, the pressure’s amplified. Social media showcases only the highlight reel, not the debt, exhaustion, or stress that often accompany it. But we still scroll and wonder, *Why not me?*

Ecclesiastes answers that longing with honesty. In verse 8, the Preacher describes someone who works tirelessly, builds wealth, but has no one to share it with: *“There is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches…”* It’s a picture of success without joy. Activity without peace. A full schedule, but an empty soul.

**A Better Way Forward**

Then, however, he offers a better way. In verse 6, we read: “Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.” In other words, it’s better to have less with peace than more with anxiety. That’s not laziness—it’s wisdom. A life lived with margin, grounded in God’s provision.

This is the invitation Ecclesiastes extends: not to give up on excellence, but to anchor it in the right place. When our work flows from a love for God and a desire to serve others, it becomes a blessing, not a burden. It becomes worship.

**From Striving to Rest**

We don’t need applause—we need peace. And in Christ, we already have it. His approval is not based on performance. It’s based on grace. That frees us from striving to be seen and lets us rest in being known.

Maybe that’s where you are—tired, overextended, wondering what you’re chasing. Ecclesiastes invites you to step off the treadmill of comparison. You don’t have to strive for identity. You already have it in Jesus.

We often see examples of this. A professional sacrifices evenings and weekends to climb the corporate ladder, only to feel lonely at the top. A family maxes out their budget to project an image, while tension quietly builds at home. These aren’t just stories—they’re warnings. And they echo Ecclesiastes’ caution about what we’re trading in our pursuit of more.

Sometimes this isn’t just about envy. It’s about fear—fear of being unseen, of being left behind. So we push harder, hoping success will quiet that fear. But only God can give the peace we’re looking for.

**Redefining Success**

Contentment doesn’t mean quitting. It means redefining success. It means anchoring your worth in something that lasts. When you stop striving in vain, your ambition gets reoriented. Your work becomes more joyful. Your giving becomes more meaningful.

So ask yourself today: *Who am I trying to impress? What am I really chasing?*

Success Without Joy: Why More Never Satisfies

***“All his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity.”* — *Ecclesiastes 2:23***

That verse reveals a painful truth: even a productive life can feel empty when our work is driven by the wrong purpose. Wealth on its own doesn’t bring peace—often, it brings more pressure. But Scripture offers a better way.

**What’s Driving All the Effort?**

It’s easy to admire someone who plans wisely, saves consistently, and builds steadily over time. Our culture praises that kind of discipline as responsible and virtuous—and often, it is. But Ecclesiastes challenges us to ask: **What’s driving all that effort?**

*“I hated all my toil... seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me.”* — *Ecclesiastes 2:18*

The Preacher isn’t condemning hard work—he’s grieving that all he’s built will one day be handed off, possibly to someone who won’t value or steward it well.

**Success Without Peace**

That’s where sorrow begins—not in failure, but in success without peace.

The more we accumulate, the more we fear losing it. What promised security only multiplies anxiety. What a striking image—someone lying awake at night, not from failure, but from success. The more they possess, the more they worry.

This is the irony of accumulation: it convinces us that security is just one more achievement away, while quietly making us more anxious the more we gain.

Jesus echoes this same warning in Luke 12. He tells the parable of a rich man who reaped such a bountiful harvest that he decided to build bigger barns to store it all. His conclusion?

*“Take life easy—eat, drink, and be merry.”*

To the world, that sounds like winning. But Jesus calls him a fool. Why? Because that very night, his life would be demanded of him. Then comes the haunting question:

*“The things you have prepared, whose will they be?”*

**The Danger of an Entitled Heart**

What’s even more interesting is the context of that parable. Jesus responds in this manner to a man who asks Him to settle an inheritance dispute. This wasn’t someone who earned the wealth—he simply wanted his share, and maybe more.

Jesus’ warning is clear: a greedy heart isn’t the only danger. **An entitled heart is just as spiritually destructive.**

And that’s exactly what the Preacher feared in *Ecclesiastes*—wealth falling into the hands of someone who didn’t labor for it and may not know how to handle it wisely.

We see this all the time in real life. Many financial advisors and estate planners will tell you that inherited wealth, especially when passed down without spiritual or emotional maturity, can do more harm than good. It can fracture families, distort priorities, and erode purpose.

The problem isn’t money itself—it’s the absence of wisdom alongside it.

**Where True Peace Comes From**

That’s why this lesson matters. You can save well, build wealth, and still feel anxious and unsatisfied—not because you failed, but because you expected your efforts to give you what only God can: **peace, joy, and purpose.**

But here’s the good news—Ecclesiastes doesn’t leave us in despair.

*“To the one who pleases Him, God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy.”* — *Ecclesiastes 2:26*

The solution isn’t to stop working or saving. The solution is to stop worshiping our work.
 Stop defining success by the size of your bank account and start defining it by your faithfulness to the One who owns it all.

When we live as stewards instead of owners, the pressure lifts. We begin to see wealth not as a prize to secure our future, but as a tool to serve God’s Kingdom. Accumulation loses its grip, and generosity takes root. That’s when real joy begins.

So, ask yourself today:

- *Am I building bigger barns, or am I faithfully stewarding what God has already entrusted to me?*
- *Am I chasing peace through my possessions, or receiving it from the Prince of Peace Himself?*

Because in the end, **peace doesn’t come from what we’ve earned. It comes from who we trust.**

The Search for Satisfaction: When Pleasure Falls Short

__*“I said in my heart, ‘Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself.’ But behold, this also was vanity.”*  —Ecclesiastes 2:1__

That verse kicks off one of the boldest experiments in all of Scripture. The Preacher in the book of Ecclesiastes set out to discover whether pleasure could deliver lasting satisfaction. He pursued laughter, wine, work, wealth—every earthly delight you can imagine.

So what was his conclusion?

*“Behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind.”* —Ecclesiastes 1:14

Despite having unlimited resources and access to every pleasure imaginable, he found it all to be empty. And that’s a message our culture desperately needs to hear. Because today, we’re constantly bombarded with messages like “treat yourself,” “follow your heart,” and “do what makes you happy.”

__The Illusion of Fulfillment__

From the trips we plan to the gadgets we buy, the world tells us that joy is just one more experience or purchase away. But Ecclesiastes forces us to ask a harder question:

What if pleasure doesn’t lead where we think it does?

Imagine a bag of old receipts. Each one represents a moment that once brought excitement: a nice dinner, a new gadget, a spontaneous splurge. But now? They’re just scraps of paper. The feeling is gone. The thrill didn’t last. That’s exactly what the Preacher experienced—only on a far greater scale.

In the passage referenced in the beginning, the Preacher says: *“Come now, I will test you with pleasure,”* and test it he did. He pursued laughter and wine, built houses and planted vineyards. He created lush gardens, amassed wealth, hired singers, gathered servants, and surrounded himself with every earthly comfort—even concubines.

This wasn’t reckless living. This was a thoughtful, calculated test. He says, *“Whatever my eyes desired, I did not keep from them.”* In today’s terms, it would be like saying, *“If it looked fun, I bought it. If it felt good, I did it.”* He chased every high with purpose—and still came up empty.

__Why Pleasure Can’t Satisfy__

Why?

Because pleasure was never meant to carry the weight of our deepest longings. It promises fulfillment but delivers only a momentary escape. The author of Ecclesiastes says it’s like trying to hold smoke in your hands—real for a moment, then gone.

Now, most of us don’t live lavishly like this, much less have the ability to do so. But we do have our own versions. We grab a comfort snack. We scroll social media a little too long. We click “add to cart,” hoping the package will brighten our week. And for a moment, it might. But that moment fades. And the cycle starts again.

This reminds me of Jesus’ parable of the prodigal son. Here was a young man who took his inheritance and pursued a life of pleasure, only to end up broke and broken.

But think about this: the Preacher had everything the prodigal son wanted. He had wealth, freedom, and opportunity—yet he ended up just as empty.

Different stories. Same outcome.

__A Word of Warning—and Hope__

But here’s the grace in His story: we don’t have to repeat it. His experiment, his pain, his regret—it all serves as a warning. He turns around to tell us, *“There’s nothing here. Don’t waste your life chasing shadows.”*

That’s a gift. It frees us to reflect:

- What am I turning to when I feel tired, discouraged, or disconnected?
- What “quick fixes” do I reach for without thinking?
- And more importantly, what would it look like to seek joy in God instead?

That doesn’t mean we need to stop enjoying life. God is a generous Father who delights in giving good gifts. He created joy. But those gifts were never meant to replace Him.

When pleasure becomes the destination, we miss the Giver. We settle for the gift and forget the One who gives it.

So, the next time you reach for something to boost your mood, pause and ask:

- Is this about joy or escape?
- Is this feeding my soul or just distracting it?

Ecclesiastes doesn’t just warn us—it points us back to what matters most. It helps us dethrone the idol of pleasure and place our trust in Someone, not something. And that Someone will never fail.
