*What do you think the most important thing that you’ve learned through your process at Eventide?*

*You know Eventide, we just celebrated a 15-year anniversary of founding Eventide and so the…so the one thing that I really believe even more strongly today is that every single person through their work has great capacity; capacity for good, also capacity for bad. I think for a lot of people that want to bring their faith into their work, they’re often thinking about what I would define as the instrumental value of work. Right, so they’re often thinking about, hey how do I, um, be generous. But there’s something that I think is even more meaningful in work which is the intrinsic value of that work. If I have a child who’s sick and I bring my child to the doctor and the doctor is able to care for my child, the doctor has shown me a lot of love and, like, that I feel loved by that doctor, because a doctor has taken care of my child. So that is intrinsic value of the work of a doctor even if the doctor is not bringing some of that instrumental value to their work. And often I think, especially people of faith, are more focused on the instrumental value more than the intrinsic value. And so you know that’s true of the financial advisor, it’s true of the investor, it’s true of the doctor, the nurse, the engineer. If you’re a person of faith, if God in creation had a purpose for the work that you do today, what would that purpose statement be? Like, to really understand that I think it’s going to give us so much more meaning and fulfillment in the work that we do.*

*So what were the problems that you saw with investing and how did you think they needed to be fixed?*

*Shaun, when I was starting Eventide with Finny one of the biggest issues I saw in the investment world is that people didn’t even understand what investing is. I think that the number is that 150 million investment accounts exist in this country but I don’t think most of those people have really thought through the purpose of business or of investing. I was actually recently speaking to a professional money manager and that person couldn’t explain to me what the purpose of investing is, but a couple of weeks ago I was at…speaking to a class of undergraduate students and I asked them “what is the purpose of investing?” and they said “to allocate capital” and I said to them “where would you want to allocate capital?” And they started giving me examples of the types of things that they would…where they would want to allocate capital, and so one of the things I often remind people is that we also root for the success of the companies we’re investing in. So it’s not just about avoiding ill-gotten gain, but really like what do you want to see in the world? Those are the areas we should be putting our capital? So if you if you are investing in tobacco, an investor is happiest if everybody in the world smoked tobacco, you want more and more people to be customers in tobacco companies. Vice versa, if you are investing in a cancer drug, you want everybody with cancer to have access to that drug, right? So what are we rooting for in the world? Most investors haven’t really thought through the purpose of investing or the power of investing to change the world.*

What to Look For When Choosing a Financial Advisor

__Should you wait for the market to reach its lowest point before you invest?__

If you had to choose between (1) regularly investing $100 into the stock market each month or (2) saving $100 each month and only investing this money when the market “dips,” which would you choose?

Many believe we should wait and invest when the market hits its lowest point. With this in mind, you may be surprised to learn the results of an experiment that is detailed in this third video of our Timeless Truths for Investing series.

__Jason Myhre:__ *“You don’t want to buy things when they are expensive and sell them later at a lower price. You want to do the opposite of that, you want to buy low later and sell high. There’s actually a systematic way that you can do this.*

*Let’s imagine that we were dropped into history somewhere between the years 1920 and 1979. Wherever we land, however, our task is that we have to invest in the US stock market for the next 40 years.*

*Now I’m going to give you a choice between two investment strategies that you can pick from. The first one, option one is very simple. You can invest $100 a month for that 40 years no matter where you land. Option two is you can save up that $100 a month keeping cash on the sidelines and you can wait when the market dips and you can try to buy those dips in the stock market. Now, with this option, I’m going to sweeten the deal. I’m going to grant you perfect knowledge of the future. You’ll always be able to buy them at those absolute bottom prices.*

*Question is, which of these would you choose? Option two sure is enticing, isn’t it? I mean, it just seems like a slam dunk. Well, someone ran this experiment and I want to share with you the results, and I’ll tell you how to read it. When this blue line is above the horizontal dotted line, what that means is that it was a period in history where the buy the dips strategy, which was option two, was the better choice to make.*

*70% of the time a monthly investment outperforms in history. Very interesting, 70%, pretty impressive. But I granted an enormous advantage to the second option, perfect knowledge of the future, right? None of us have this. And so in practice, that option two is very hard to get right. So let’s, let’s account for that. Let’s say we get it wrong by just two months in terms of that timing decision, and then re-crunch the numbers on this problem. And what we find is that when we do that, then this monthly investment outperforms 97% of the time, virtually the entire experience.*

*Now, how can this be? What is the magic of investing monthly? Well, it’s not magic, but it is a very simple concept, and it’s called dollar cost averaging. A perfect example is our $100 dollars a month. Now the dollar amount can vary, the frequency can vary, but it’s a fixed amount of money at regular intervals over time.”*
