__I love watching house hunting shows.__

I really enjoy seeing how people live in different cities, or even countries, and what they prioritize when buying a house.

Recently, I was watching a show where a woman had unexpectedly inherited some money and was looking to buy a small apartment for weekend getaways.

The money she inherited was just enough to purchase something in the area where she grew up. Both of her parents had recently passed, and she felt this would be a way for her to still feel their presence in her life.

What a beautiful reason to buy a property!

As we were watching the show, my husband and I started asking each other what we would do if we were the beneficiaries of an unexpected inheritance.

I think we have all at some point dreamed of having a long lost, rich uncle who leaves us a fortune, right?

It’s fun to imagine what you would buy, where you would travel, or how you would invest money that just lands in your lap. The possibilities are truly endless.

But while it’s fun to dream, I don’t think any of us would seriously pin our hopes and futures on some unknown wealthy family member. Luckily, as Christians, we don’t need to!

We have a loving Father who has promised us an inheritance far bigger and greater than anything we could even dream of ourselves.

There are countless references in the Bible about being an heir to His Kingdom and so many popular songs about being a child of God; but when was the last time you really rested in that knowledge, or allowed it to serve as a reminder of His goodness and grace in our lives? When was the last time you thanked Him and marveled at His grace and mercy in providing for you?

A quick search on a Bible app will bring up many Old and New Testament references to this promise. Here are just a few of my favorites to get you started:

1. Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession (__[Psalm 2:8](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+2%3A8&version=ESV)__).
2. Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance (__[Psalm 16:5-6](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+16%3A5-6&version=ESV)__).
3. Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir (__[Galatians 4:7](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+4%3A7&version=ESV)__).
4. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of His glory (__[Ephesians 1:13b-14](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians+1%3A13b-14&version=ESV)__).

And perhaps my favorite…

5. In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.  This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time (__[1 Peter 1:3b-4](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+1%3A3b-4&version=ESV)__).

So, where is your focus today?  On what are you hanging your hopes and your future?  Is it on earthly riches, earthly rewards, or is it on God’s promises and provisions?  When was the last time that you acknowledged and thanked God for the incredible inheritance He has given you?

What would it look like if you lived your life every day, in the full realization that you are a child of God and, therefore, an heir in His Kingdom?

Let’s make an effort to thank God each day for His mercy and grace, and for the wonderful privilege it is to be a child of God. Let’s live our lives in a way that reflects that to those around us. And most importantly, let’s use the promise of our inheritance to stay close and connected with Him.

Going back to the house hunting show, the woman did find a wonderful little apartment and ended up using it much more than she thought she would. She also said that she felt much more connected to her parents when she was in the area that she had been raised.

I pray that, just like on the show, we use our inheritance to stay close to and feel the presence of God, our Father, in our daily lives.
