Many people don’t realize that they may be eligible for financial aid to help pay for their medical bills--here's how.

Many people don’t realize that they may be eligible for financial aid to help pay for their medical bills. There are a number of different programs available, depending on your income and other factors. The best way to find out if you qualify for financial assistance is to contact the organization or program directly.
Finding helpful sources of funding for your medical bills can make a huge difference. Here are a couple of places you can look for grants, financial aid, or other sources of funding for your medical bills.
Many hospitals and clinics have financial assistance programs for patients who need assistance to pay their medical bills. These programs vary from hospital to hospital, so it’s important to contact the hospital where you received treatment to find out if they offer any financial assistance.
If you're a self-pay patient with large medical bills, you may be able to get your debts forgiven through a program called Debt Relief Forgiveness (DRF). DRF is a government program that helps people struggling to pay their medical bills. To qualify for DRF, your income must be below a certain level and you must have at least $1000 in medical debt. If you meet the qualifications for DRF, the government will forgive your debts.
Asking your provider for a discount is a great way to lower the cost of your medical bills. Many providers have automatic discounts for self-pay patients or are open to negotiating with self-pay or cash-pay patients. Learn how to negotiate discounts here.
CHM is here to help guide you. In addition to helping members find the tools they need, members can call the ministry for additional assistance applying for financial aid or negotiating with providers. It’s our honor to help you through the process.
Remember to explore all of your options and seek help from professionals when you need to as you pay medical bills. With a little planning, organization, and the right resources, you can manage your medical expenses and stay on top of your finances. It helps you and it helps CHM!
Founded in 1981, Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM) is the original health cost sharing ministry for Christians. CHM is a voluntary health cost sharing ministry through which participating Christians work together to share the burden of medical expenses. The powerful outcome of this harmonious relationship is that members have shared billions of dollars for medical bills while also keeping participation costs low. The ministry is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
CHM is not a health insurance company. Participation is a voluntary expression of Christian faith and does not require a contract. CHM members join the ministry as part of a biblical covenant through which each party works to help the other.
CHM members help carry the load for their brothers and sisters in Christ, reflecting the spiritual values outlined in Galatians 6:2 and Acts 2 and 4.
