In this conversation with Rob West, Bethany shares her “why” behind her book, "Women of Worth", and how she hopes it impacts readers.
Faithful Steward Issue 5
Finances are a huge part of our lives, even though sometimes, as women, we’d rather bury our heads in the sand and cross our fingers, hoping we never have to deal with “that” area. Statistics show that 95% of women will be the primary financial decision-maker in their household at some point in their lives. Not due to their own choosing. Not because they love investments. Not because they really enjoy paying bills. But because they will not have a choice. If women are not educated in this area, they may be thrust into an unanticipated season of life, ill-equipped to make wise financial decisions to steward their finances for God’s glory and Kingdom.
[Q] What kinds of women—or situations—were you hoping would feel seen and understood through these pages?I wrote this book for women who feel unseen. Women who feel unimportant or less than. Women who would never choose a chair near the head of the table in a conference room if there were extra charis against the walls. Women whose journeys may not have gone quite as they planned, and they've ended up with a self-inflicted shroud of shame over their lives. Women who truly love Jesus and believe He has plans for His children, but for some reason, doubt if those plans include them. In some unspoken subconscious, they live their lives as though they were put here to be the support person for all the people God has called to unique paths and important Kingdom work. Women who are unsure in their finances and shaky in their identity in Christ. It is for these women that I wrote the book.
[Q] What would you say this book is really about at its core—not so much in terms of advice, but in terms of the deeper invitation you’re offering readers?Women of Worth invites women on a journey to discover their identity and worth in Jesus. Women live integrated lives—it’s not compartmentalized into neat and clean boxes with no overlap. If we don’t have confidence in who God has created us to be, then we may learn about finances, but we won’t have the confidence to act on what we’ve learned. Our beliefs about ourselves, how loved by God we think we are, and our identity in Him build the whole foundation of our lives. These beliefs and truths, when spiritually healthy, enable us to build confidence in faith, in finances, and in every area of life.
Statistics show that 95% of women will be the primary financial decision-maker in their household at some point in their lives.Despite the masks we wear in front of each other, we’re all just doing our best. None of us has this life fully figured out! I want you to know that your best is good enough. This is a safe space. Just be willing to take one step at a time. There’s no judgment. There’s no place for shame here. No matter where we are in life, there’s always a next right step.
[Q] If a reader were to close the book having gained just one renewed perspective or sense of hope, what would you most want that to be?You have God-given potential and abilities beyond your wildest imagination. Before the very foundation of the earth, God developed a plan for your life. He didn’t just develop plans to give hope and a future to everyone else’s lives. He developed those good plans for your life, too. It’s no accident you are here. If you don’t recognize and internalize your value, worth, and capabilities, not only will you miss out on what God has for you, but others will miss out, as well. I can’t wait to see what God does next!
